Incident: Woman Arrested for DWI Under Leandra’s Law

Suffolk County Police today arrested a Patchogue woman after she left the scene of a motor vehicle crash while driving with two children in the vehicle in Shirley earlier today.

 

Brooke Wirshup was driving her 2018 Hyundai Elantra with two children in the vehicle when she rear-ended another vehicle on William Floyd Parkway, at the intersection of Dawn Drive in Shirley at approximately 2:45 p.m. Wirshup fled the scene in the vehicle.

 

A short time later, Seventh Precinct Officer Michelle Speed observed Wirshup’s vehicle near Revilo Avenue, and Victory Avenue, at approximately 3:05 p.m. When Officer Speed approached the vehicle, she observed two children, ages three and seventeen months, in the back seat.

 

Wirshup, 27, of 11 Edwards Street, Patchogue, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15-Years-Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Property Damage. She is being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on March 26.

 

The children were released to the custody of a relative at the scene.
