Location: 40 Bailey Road, Middle Island
Date/Time: Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at approximately 2:20 p.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating a police-involved shooting that injured a Middle Island man who threatened police and barricaded himself inside his home earlier today.

Suffolk County Police Hostage Negotiation Team and Emergency Service Section officers responded to 40 Bailey Road after a 911 call at approximately 2:20 p.m., from a concerned person stating the occupant of the home, Christopher Malerba, had made homicidal and suicidal statements. Officers were able to establish and maintain a dialogue with Malerba who had barricaded himself inside the residence.

Malerba exited the home and pointed a rifle at Emergency Service Section officers on scene. Police shot him and he went back into the house. A short time later, Malerba re-emerged from the house without the rifle and was taken into custody with the use of less than lethal weapons at approximately 5 p.m.

Malerba, 49, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital via ambulance in stable condition. There were no other injuries.

Police are asking anyone with information on this incident to contact Homicide Squad detectives at 631-852-6392.
