Incident: Man Arrested for Stealing Tanker Truck from Gas Station
Location: 76 Gas Station, 3821 Veterans Memorial Highway, Ronkonkoma
Date/Time: Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 4:30 p.m.

Suffolk County Police today arrested a Ronkonkoma man after he stole an 18-wheeler tanker truck from a gas station in Ronkonkoma then fled from police.


Welsey Shurman stole a parked 2018 Peterbilt Motors tanker truck from the 76 gas station, located at 3821 Veterans Memorial Highway, at 4:30 p.m. An employee called 911 and a police notification was issued regarding the stolen vehicle.  Sixth Precinct Police Officer Robert Dwyer observed the 18-wheeler on eastbound Portion Road in Farmingville and attempted to initiate a traffic stop but Shurman fled in the vehicle. The officer followed the tanker truck which stopped after crashing into a stop sign on Stuyvesant Drive in Selden.


Shurman, 23, was arrested and charged with Grand Larceny 2nd Degree, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle and several vehicle and traffic violations. Shurman was previously arrested on March 13 for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree and six bench warrants. He was arraigned on the March 13 charges at First District Court in Central Islip and released earlier today. He will be held overnight at the Fifth Precinct and will be arraigned tomorrow at First District Court in Central Islip.


A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
