Incident: Patchogue Man Arrested for Assault as a Hate Crime

Date/Time: Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at approximately 12:05 p.m

Suffolk County Police today arrested a Patchogue man for assaulting a man while using ethnic slurs in Patchogue earlier this week.


Fifth Precinct police officers responded to an assault, in front of a business, located at 15 Carman Street, on May 17 at approximately 1:25 p.m. The victim, a 35-year-old Hispanic man, suffered multiple contusions to his face and chest. During the assault, the suspect made derogatory comments regarding undocumented immigrants. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. The victim, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, declined hospital treatment because of COVID-19 fears.

Following an investigation by the Hate Crimes Unit, detectives arrested Victor Scala, 58, at his residence, located at 275 West Ave., at approximately 12:05 p.m. Scala was charged with Assault 3rd Degree as a Hate Crime. Scala will be held overnight at the Fifth Precinct, and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on May 21.

A criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
