Suffolk County Police today arrested a man for Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra’s Law after he was involved in a two-car crash with his wife and 11-year-old son in the vehicle.
Zahirul Islam was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima eastbound on Express Drive South when he crashed into a 2016 Lexus that was travelling eastbound at approximately 8:05 p.m.
Islam, 54, of 631 Bayview Avenue, Bellport, was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger 15-Years-Old or Younger (Leandra’s Law), and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
The 11-year-old was released to his mother at the scene. There were no injuries.
Islam will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on February 3.
